Who doesn’t love making vaginas while in a group picture?

Or a group of women yelling, “VAGINA!”

What does all of this have to do with me?

I’ll tell you.

My vagina is angry. It. Is. It’s pissed off.

Okay really that’s not true, but that was my lines.

That’s right I was the angry vagina.

No really don’t I look angry?

Why did I participate in the Vagina Monologues?

1. To connect with a community of women standing against violence against women. This is important to me. Without this community I would be fighting “the good fight” alone. It’s highly unnecessary to be alone. It’s not productive. And it’s simply exhausting. Community is good. I like my community.

2. To laugh a little. Violence against women is not funny. The Vagina Monologues has extremely funny parts. And well really sad parts. I needed to laugh. I needed a laugh and I got one. A lot of them. In fact, I laughed so hard I cried. I laughed when I heard other’s laughter. It’s good to laugh.

3. To raise money for fantastic organizations in the local area. One being HOPE the domestic violence shelter and organization in town. The second being SACIS the crisis workers for sexual assault survivors in my community.

I’ll do anything for these groups because without them my community wouldn’t exist (see number 1)

4. Eve Ensler creator and author of the Vagina Monologues is one of my role models. When I work on my research and interview women and listen to heart breaking and funny stories I know that the topics aren’t as silenced as they use to be, and in part I have Eve Ensler to thank for that and many of the women that spoke out.

I have great respect for these people.

Never heard of the Vagina Monologues? There’s books you can buy, and local events you can go to, and larger productions of the Vagina Monologues. Check it out. Cuddle up with a friend and maybe a box of kleenex.
